A Perth Removals Success Story

This is based on a true story, but we have replaced real names of the company for fun (to make this article.. well interesting!).

Today we are bringing you a story on how one local Perth family created the successful removals company they own and love! Meet Jim Benson, 50 year old local Perth man who together with his brother John and Wife Megan, have built the company ‘Benson and Co Removals’ from the ground up.

Business Owners Website (BOW): Jim, can you tell us how ‘Benson and Co Removals’ started and what made you want to get into the removals industry?

Jim: Well, it all started when my brother John and I were in our mid-30’s. John was working for another removals company at the time and had been working as a removalist for around 5 years for this company when his employer decided to retire and was looking at selling his business. At the time, Wendy and I were newlyweds and I was working at a local bank as loans officer. Wendy was working as a receptionist for a solicitor. John approached me back then and asked whether I was interested in going in with him as business partners and purchasing the removals company he worked for. I wasn’t particularly interested at that time as Wendy and I were both happy in our jobs and we weren’t really keen to get into debt as we were saving to buy a house. So we passed on the offer and since John was unable to buy the business outright himself, we thought the whole idea had been put to bed. The owner was unable to sell the business as a going concern, so he ended up selling the removals trucks individually. John went ahead and bought one of the trucks and then approached me again. As luck would have it, I was made redundant in my position at the bank around the same time and decided to go into partnership with my brother in the removalist business. So it was then that ‘Benson and Co Removals’ was started.

BOW: So you started out with one truck. How many removals trucks do you now own and how long did it take to get to where you are now?

Jim: That’s right. We started out with one truck and in those early days, Jim and I did it all. We took the bookings, moved the furniture and drove the trucks ourselves and worked very long hours. Wendy helped with the book keeping and admin side of things and over time we were able to hire more staff and then buy more trucks to keep up with our bookings. We now have 6 removals trucks and a staff of 20.

BOW: Do you have any advice for anyone starting out in small business?

Jim: Hard work and perseverance and thick skin. It’s how we got to where we are now!
